The highlight of cherry blossom viewing at Shinsen-en is that visitors can enjoy cherry blossom viewing in the oldest historical garden of Heian-kyo. Around 100 cherry trees are planted around the garden pond, and they bloom beautifully from early to mid-April every year. The beautiful scenery of cherry blossoms and the garden pond is truly spectacular. Shinsen-en is also one of the most beautiful parks in Japan.
Shinsen-en is also known as the birthplace of Hanami in Japan. It is said that cherry blossom viewing began in 812 when Emperor Saga went to Shinsen-en to appreciate cherry blossoms.
At Shinsen-en, visitors can obtain a limited time-only red seal with the inscription “Cherry Blossom Banquet” until late April every year.
