At Hirano Shrine, cherry trees have been planted since the Heian period (794-1192) as a symbol of vitality, and today there are 400 cherry trees of about 60 varieties.

Since ancient times, many rare species of cherry trees have been dedicated by aristocrats, and visitors can enjoy a month and a half of various varieties of cherry trees blooming in turn.

The ” Sakigake-zakura ” is the origin of Hirano Shrine and is an early-blooming variety, so it is said that the cherry blossom viewing season in the capital begins when this cherry tree starts blooming.

Many rape blossoms are also blooming in the precincts of the shrine, and the co-starring of these beautiful pink and yellow flowers is also popular!

Spring Event ” Cherry Blossom Festival

The Ouka Matsuri ( Cherry Blossom Festival) is held every year on April 10 at Hirano Shrine. The origin of this festival is said to be that Emperor Hanayama went to Hirano Shrine to pray for the prosperity of his successor, and a temporary imperial ceremony was held there.

The festival usually coincides with the full bloom of cherry blossoms, attracting many cherry blossom-viewing visitors.

Cute and popular “Sakura-mikuji

The “Hirano Sakura-mikuji” consists of a cherry blossom-shaped omikuji and a set of tanzaku (paper strips) with messages that are selected from the 20 rare varieties of cherry blossoms found at Hirano Shrine.

The omikuji is folded into a bud shape, and when opened, it takes the shape of a fully blooming cherry petal. This cute-looking omikuji is popular among spring visitors to the shrine.

How to access

  • Get off at ” Kitano Shiraume-cho ” station on the Keifuku Electric Railway Kitano Line and walk 7 minutes.
  • Kyoto City Bus ” Kinugasa Gakko-mae ” stop, 3 min. walk

Parking for 17 cars is available on the northeast corner of the east side of the street.
