Byodoin is planted with various types of cherry trees, such as Someiyoshino, weeping cherry, and mountain cherry, each of which has its own beauty. Someiyoshino cherry trees are characterized by their light pink color, while weeping cherry trees have beautiful weeping branches. The yamazakura cherry tree is characterized by its dark pink flowers and is an early blooming cherry tree.
Another attraction is the view of the cherry blossoms over the Phoenix Hall. The Phoenix Hall, a national treasure built in the late Heian period (794-1185), is said to have been constructed in the image of the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. The roof of the Hall of Phoenixes is decorated with phoenixes, which are graceful and beautiful.
